Me llamo Timmy y soy un gran aficionado a la fotografía. De hecho, la afición me viene de familia. Tanto mi padre como mi abuelo han sido grandes fotógrafos, aunque quien lo fue y se dedicó a ello profesionalmente fue mi bisabuelo, Henry.
Henry Bedforshire era natural de Reading, pero desde muy joven vivió en Londres. Allí conoció una urbe que albergaba ya a cientos de miles de personas; algunos naturales del lugar y muchos otros atraídos por la incipiente industrialización y por el comienzo del germen de lo que hoy conocemos como la "City" londinense. A caballo entre dos siglos, mi bisabuelo comenzó retratando las costumbres de su época y poco a poco fue alcanzando notoriedad, hasta que fundó su propio estudio, por el que pasaron miles de ciudadanos desconocidos, pero también algunas de las celebridades de la época que los franceses dieron en denominar la "belle époque".
A raíz de un trabajo para clase, me he adentrado en el patrimonio fotográfico que de Henry conserva mi familia y me ha parecido fascinante. La sociedad en tiempos de mi bisabuelo no tiene nada que ver con la de nuestros tiempos. Investigué mucho sobre la misma y ha sido un trabajo apasionante.
Quisiera explicaros cómo era la Inglaterra de fines del XIX y, a modo de introducción, os voy a mostrar unas pocas fotos de la primavera de 1899, año en el que Henry comenzó a inmortalizar a las gentes de su barrio, cómo vivían, a qué se dedicaban...

Esta época se conoce como "victoriana" por corresponder con la mayoría del más extenso reinado (exceptuando el de la actual Isabel II) de una monarca en el Reino Unido, Victoria I. De ella, os hablaré el próximo día. Por hoy, ya es suficiente. Os aseguro que os sorprenderá mi relato. A mis compañeros y compañeras de clase les encantó saber que, en aquellos años, no todos los niños tenían que ir al colegio... aunque luego se dieran cuenta de que casi es mejor poder estudiar como hacemos todos hoy en día, jeje.
